Recently, we were graced with Avril Lavigne’s presence for the “Let It Show” holiday concert at Mohegan Sun Arena. The one thing about Avril that I love is her consistency with her look; she has always been a punk rock princess with long blonde textured locks and a classic smoky eye. Although her look is not for everyone, I think it’s important to have some variety in your makeup looks, so following these easy steps will help recreate the “Avril” look.
Avril’s complexion is soft, pale, matte, and creamy. To get this look, start off with a matte primer; I love using MAC Mattifying Gel ($19). Unlike most gel primers, this one actually stays put and is long-lasting. Follow this with a foundation that has a velvet look to give you a natural, flawless complexion; try using Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation ($38). This will leave your skin with a matte look and oil-free for hours with this easy-to-use formula. Just apply with a dense fluffy synthetic brush for an airbrushed application.
As far as eyes are concerned, Avril’s signature glossy black look can be achieved with just two simple products. The first such product is Stila Cosmetics Kajal eye coal in onyx ($18). Apply this product liberally along your eyelid, stopping before your crease, then apply liner to your inner rim on your top and bottom eyelid lash line. Blink a few times, then reapply; the more of this product you use and the longer it has time to warm up on your eye, the better the effect.
Once you have the liner on, take a short, dense shadow smudge brush and begin blending outward around the entire eye to create a gradient fade of black. The Kajal liner has a subtle patent leather finish to it which, as it melts, helps to give you a greasy black look. For additional sheen, add a high-shine metallic gunmetal eye shadow on top of the eye coal. Apply a few coats of black mascara.
Finish the look off with a translucent red gloss. I suggest Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18) in the color Meta.
Tip: If you only own a red lipstick, apply then wipe away for a subtle stained look and finish with clear gloss.
Trick: To achieve a glossy black smoky eye, you can also apply an eye-safe clear gloss over a long-wear water and smudge-proof eyeliner. This, however, will not last as long as a Kajal eye coal.
